This chart was specifically mentioned in one of the forums on Ravelry, and it\u2019s available free. It\u2019s now available in <a href=\"http:\/\/gosyo.co.jp\/english\/pattern\/eHTML\/ePDF\/1012\/4w\/amikomo3-11_Organic_Cotton_Shawl.pdf\">English<\/a>, but originally it was only in Japanese \u2013 so I\u2019m using the Japanese chart to show you how to read them..<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to break the page down into little bits and walk you through the process I use to &#8216;translate&#8217; a pattern. That\u2019s my pattern repeat! So I have a 12 stitch pattern repeat. Next to the 12 is a little symbol that looks a bit like a book case. That symbol also appears at the bottom of the \u2018finished shawl\u2019 graphic, under the 26c. That tells me there is 73 stitches in my original chain (it stands to reason that little bookcase symbol means \u2018stitch\u2019 in this context. <em>And of course, once I know that, the symbol is likely be the same on all Japanese charts<\/em> <em>so it&#8217;s something I can look for in future.<\/em><br \/>\n73 divided by 12? 6 (plus that magic 1) \u2013 so that\u2019s 6 repeats.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image22-repeat.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-560\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image22-repeat.jpg\" alt=\"103-3b image22 repeat\" width=\"181\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image22-repeat.jpg 181w, https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image22-repeat-168x300.jpg 168w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 181px) 100vw, 181px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s that I see below the 73?<\/p>\n<p>The number 6 and a strange sort of\u00a0 \u2018t\u2019 shape.<\/p>\n<p>That strange \u2018t\u2019 must mean \u2018repeat\u2019 (because of the maths above, right &#8211; I&#8217;m looking for something that says &#8216;6&#8217;)<\/p>\n<p>Oh, in that case the body of my shawl is 15 repeats. How do I know? It\u2019s right there on the side of my schematic \u2013 under the 134c and the (121 gobbledegook).<br \/>\nSo I know my stitch repeat is 12, and that I need 6 of them (with a starting chain of 73). I also know I need 15 body repeats \u2013 but what\u2019s the body repeat?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image23-bodyrepeat.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-561\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image23-bodyrepeat.jpg\" alt=\"103-3b image23 bodyrepeat\" width=\"208\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image23-bodyrepeat.jpg 208w, https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image23-bodyrepeat-184x300.jpg 184w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 208px) 100vw, 208px\" \/><\/a>Handily that\u2019s been marked out for us as well \u2013 that little bracket going from 1 to 10? That\u2019s our repeat. Ok, how did I work that out?<br \/>\nWell, if you look just above the point where it tells you the stitch repeat, you can see a single DC. Into that goes a shell, then another one (with 2DC either side), then another one (with 3DC), then another one (with 4DC!), then 3DC, then 2DC, the 1DC Shells coming back to 1 single DC on it\u2019s own.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re back to the start (!) and that happens on row 9. Row 10 is the same as Row 2 (so really we have an 8 row repeat, but I can work that out).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now, remember I said at the start we&#8217;d come back to the scary looking text at the top of the pattern?\u00a0 Well here we go..<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image24-guage.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-562\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image24-guage.jpg\" alt=\"103-3b image24 guage\" width=\"464\" height=\"137\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image24-guage.jpg 464w, https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image24-guage-300x89.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 464px) 100vw, 464px\" \/><\/a>We&#8217;re interested in the numbers, and I&#8217;m going to take each bullet point in turn.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image25-guage2a.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-568\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image25-guage2a.jpg\" alt=\"103-3b image25 guage2a\" width=\"456\" height=\"42\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image25-guage2a.jpg 456w, https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image25-guage2a-300x28.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 456px) 100vw, 456px\" \/><\/a>In that first line we have two numbers [584] and &#8230;150g.\u00a0 So I need 150g of something.\u00a0 I bet that [584] (educated guesswork here) is the yards or meters.\u00a0 Because the schematic measurements are in cm and not inches, it&#8217;s reasonable to think that this is probably also metric and referring to meters. Using something that tells me how many meters are in 100g (like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/?page_id=67\">my handy tool<\/a>) I know that&#8217;s about 400 per 100g <em>(the maths looked like this if you&#8217;re interested: 584\/3 = 195 per 50g.\u00a0 195&#215;2 = 390 per 100g)\u00a0<\/em>390meters per 100g is 5ply or sport weight yarn &#8211; so I&#8217;m probably looking for something about that weight (<em>note: 4ply comes in at 400 per 100g, so you could substitute that pretty easily<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>Dandy.\u00a0 Lets look at line 2&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image25-guage2b.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-569\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image25-guage2b.jpg\" alt=\"103-3b image25 guage2b\" width=\"450\" height=\"27\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image25-guage2b.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image25-guage2b-300x18.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a>That looks suspiciously like a hook size to me &#8211; and a quick google of Japanese hook sizes gives me this chart (shout out to <strong>Cotton and Cloud<\/strong> for an awesome resource) which tells me that&#8217;s equivalent to a 3.5mm hook (Canadian 9, US E\/4).\u00a0 Ok, I now know how much yarn I need, and what size hook.\u00a0 As a double check, a 3.5mm hook for 4ply feels within the right ballpark (obviously if you do this and end up with lace-weight and a 10mm hook, or chunky and a 1.25mm hook, you need to look again at the numbers)<\/p>\n<p>Ok, line 3 is quite involved, and I have a sneaky suspicion this tells me my gauge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image25-guage2c.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-570\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image25-guage2c.jpg\" alt=\"103-3b image25 guage2c\" width=\"421\" height=\"31\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image25-guage2c.jpg 421w, https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image25-guage2c-300x22.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 421px) 100vw, 421px\" \/><\/a>10cm x 10cm (or 4&#8243; by 4&#8243;) is a common size for taking a gauge measurement, so that is probably talking about gauge. Having worked out the bookcase symbol means \u2018stitches\u2019 previously, I now know that I needs something that is 10cm square and is 28 stitches wide and a (currently unknown) number of rows high \u2013 so that must mean that <strong>9<\/strong> must be rows.<br \/>\nThat symbol turns up again at the side of my schematic.\u00a0 Next to the number 121.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image26-rows.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-564\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image26-rows.jpg\" alt=\"103-3b image26 rows\" width=\"638\" height=\"218\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image26-rows.jpg 638w, https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image26-rows-300x103.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.tuesdayfortnite.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/103-3b-image26-rows-500x171.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/><\/a>I already know I have 15 repeats of an 8 row pattern, and funnily enough 15 x 8 = 120 \u2013 so there must be an extra row on the end to make the pattern work!<\/p>\n<p>So what have we got?\u00a0 We have now worked out that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>we need to chain 73 to start<\/li>\n<li>we have 6 pattern repeats cross the width,<\/li>\n<li>we need to do 121 rows (or 15 repeats) of the body repeat<\/li>\n<li>to give us a shawl that is 26cm by 134cm<\/li>\n<li>and then we can add an 11cm fringe if I wish).<\/li>\n<li>we will be using about 600meters of a heavy 4ply or 5ply yarn<\/li>\n<li>with a size 3.5mm hook<\/li>\n<li>we are using nothing but chain and DC stitches<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now all I have left to do is follow the chart&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>And in case any of you want a double check of your working out &#8211; here&#8217;s the foundation and first two rows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Foundation row:<\/strong> Chain 73 and 3 turning chain<\/li>\n<li><strong>Row 1\u2026.<\/strong> 4DC into the 4th Chain from the hook, Ch2, *1DC into 6th Chain, Ch2, [4DC, Ch2, 4DC] into 6th Chain, Ch2**<br \/>\nRepeat from * to ** across row till last 6 chain.
